Beer Check

Trail Terms

A beer check is a designated stop along the trail where beer and refreshments are provided. It serves as both a rest break and a social gathering point to regroup the pack.

Purpose

  • Allows slower runners to catch up to FRBs
  • Provides hydration and socialization mid-trail
  • Gives the hare more time if they are a live hare
  • Opportunity for the pack to complain about trail quality

Variations

  • Beer Near: A trail marking indicating a beer check is approaching
  • Shot Check: Shots or stronger beverages instead of beer (Shot Near marks the approach)
  • Water Check: For hashes in hot climates or with non-drinkers

Etiquette

  • Don’t drink all the beer before the back of the pack arrives
  • Take only what you need — there may be more checks ahead
  • Thank the hare or whoever carried the beer to that location
  • On-On — call to continue after a check
  • SCB — those most likely to have reached the beer check early
