Check
Also known as: Check Back, YBF
Trail TermsA check is a trail marking that indicates the true trail could continue in any direction from that point. It is the hare’s primary tool for slowing down the front runners and keeping the pack together.
How It Works
When encountering a check (typically a circle in flour or chalk), the FRBs must spread out and search in different directions to find where the trail continues. Meanwhile, slower hashers catch up, and the pack regroups.
Types of Checks
| Marking | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Circle | Check — trail could go any direction |
| YBF | ”You’ve Been F***ed” — false trail, go back to check |
| Check Back | Return to the check and try another direction |
| Arrow | True trail found, everyone follow |
| Beer Check | Refreshment stop with beer for the pack |
| Shot Check | Refreshment stop with shots or spirits |
Strategy
Good checks:
- Have the true trail in an unexpected direction
- Include false trails that look convincing
- Allow the back of the pack to catch up
- Create opportunities for SCBs to find shortcuts
