Down-Down
Culture & TraditionsA down-down is the ceremonial drinking of beer from a vessel (often a large mug or pitcher) that has been poured over the drinker’s head or shoe. It is the central ritual of hash punishment, celebration, and recognition.
The Ceremony
During circle time, the Religious Advisor (RA) calls individuals into the center for various reasons:
- First-time hashers (virgins)
- Visitors from other kennels
- Returnees after absence
- Those accused of infractions (new shoes, short cutting, FRB behavior)
- Birthday celebrations
- Hash naming ceremonies
Variations
- Traditional: Drink from the vessel while the pack sings a down-down song
- Shoe: For serious infractions, the beer is consumed from the offender’s own shoe
- No hands: Some kennels require down-downs to be performed without using hands
Songs
Down-downs are accompanied by specific songs led by the Song Master. Common choices include Swing Low, Sweet Chariot and various hash-specific parodies.
