Fishhook

Also known as: Fish Hook

Trail Terms

A fishhook is a trail mark where two beverages (usually shots or beers) are waiting. The first person to reach it (FRB) must grab both drinks, turn around, and run them all the way back to the last person in the pack (DFL). The two then drink together.

Purpose

The fishhook is designed to equalize the pack by forcing the fastest hasher to reverse course and find the slowest. It effectively:

  • Drags the FRB to the very back of the pack
  • Rewards the DFL with a delivered drink
  • Brings the front and back of the pack together socially
  • Gives the middle of the pack a chance to take the lead

How It Works

  • The hare places two drinks at the fishhook location
  • The first hasher to arrive must take both drinks and run back through the pack
  • They find the DFL and the two share the drinks together
  • A number on the mark may indicate how many front runners must perform this duty
  • FRB — the hasher who gets hooked
  • DFL — the hasher who gets the delivery
  • Beer Check — a standard refreshment stop
  • Back Check — another mark that reverses direction
